It is the swing that defines the weekend: Jalen Berger in the 221st pick, a good 142 spots before the room expected him. There is no dressing it up: a F.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain. That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick-by-Pick
They reached into another round for Xavier Worthy, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Kris Abrams-Draine in the 64th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Cody Schrader at No. 95 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Luke McCaffrey at slot 133 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A wild overpay on Ty'Ron Hopper in pick 158, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Josh Wallace at the 172nd overall pick, and the board did not agree. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Cal Haladay at pick 210 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jalen Berger at the 221st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for LaDarius Henderson. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Michael Barrett at pick No. 227. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
