You can hear the double-takes from here. The Commanders took Matthew Jones at pick No. 226, roughly 40 spots before his name belonged. The math is unkind, and the D follows.

They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
