Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Commanders spent pick 253 on Devin Leary, a name most had 37 spots down the list. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first.
That Ali pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 8 they get a blindside protector. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In Round 1, Pick 15 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 18th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge. A real need, handled.
Ja'Tavion Sanders in the 36th pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They read the board right and Troy Fautanu was the payoff at No. 40. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kamari Lassiter in pick 47 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nothing to complain about; Payton Wilson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Devontez Walker in Round 3, Pick 3 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They took Blake Corum at par in the 79th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They went early on Brenden Rice in No. 80, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent pick No. 103 on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at the 123rd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
They reached into another round for Luke McCaffrey, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ty'Ron Hopper at pick 181 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They paid sticker price for Javontae Jean-Baptiste in No. 220, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value said wait; Devin Leary in pick No. 253 says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They robbed the room for Rasheen Ali here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Kenny Logan Jr. in pick 257 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
