After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Caleb Williams is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
Trotter Jr. at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. The Robinson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 2 they get the face of the franchise at fair value.
Patrick Paul in No. 36 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A conviction pick on Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 40th overall pick that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A premium they did not need to pay, Cooper Beebe a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 100th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Darius Robinson at slot 102 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good price on James Williams in the Round 5 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A minor itch, scratched.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Braelon Allen in Round 6, Pick 6, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
