There is reaching, and then there is Joe Milton III at the 167th overall pick. The Patriots jumped the board by 32 and dared it to prove them wrong. The final tally is a middling C.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. On value alone, Oladapo makes the weekend a net positive.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jordan Morgan at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Xavier Worthy at slot 68. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Mekhi Wingo in pick No. 113; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Jaheim Bell went about where he belonged in No. 161. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joe Milton III. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kitan Oladapo in Round 6, Pick 7 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A premium they did not need to pay, Eric Watts a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Elijah Jones slid further than he should have, and the 201st pick is lovely value for the cornerback. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Frank Gore Jr. at slot 229 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
