You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Jahdae Barron in Round 6, Pick 16. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. Cornerback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom. Nothing gained and nothing lost at the table.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 30 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher at fair value. A real need, handled.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at the Round 2 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Zak Zinter at par in pick No. 93, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jahdae Barron well ahead of where he belonged. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A wild overpay on Kamal Hadden in Round 6, Pick 31, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Walter Rouse at pick 212 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached into another round for Zion Nelson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
