Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Kaleb Johnson got past him. The Cowboys do not have to explain a thing at slot 136. No fireworks, but a solid B.
Ferguson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
It is not that Jackson is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a bendy edge with upside. More want than need.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Landon Jackson adds an edge rusher and leaves wide receiver, cornerback and other spots untouched.
They liked Kenneth Grant enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 54. The roster fit checks out.
They reached a country mile for Alfred Collins at the 65th overall pick, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Rylie Mills in the 80th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Jahdae Barron in slot 85, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They robbed the room for Dylan Sampson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Kaleb Johnson at Round 4, Pick 35 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
TreVeyon Henderson in the 149th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached into another round for Hunter Wohler, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Value said wait; Will Howard in pick No. 170 says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jihaad Campbell in the Round 5 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Circle this one: Cody Simon at the 173rd overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Gunnar Helm in pick 186 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Terrance Ferguson. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
