Call it larceny. Jay Higgins sat on the board until slot 171, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
Every board in the league had Howard lower, and that gap is the story. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Hit on Mason Graham and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for Landon Jackson in pick 42, and that is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Alfred Collins at slot 73 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They will replay Kaleb Johnson at Round 5, Pick 11 for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
TreVeyon Henderson in the 150th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A need, and now a little less of one.
A linebacker of that caliber at No. 170 is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jay Higgins in the 171st overall pick, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They barely believed it either: Lathan Ransom still on the board at pick No. 186. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Will Howard at pick No. 203 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They robbed the room for Donovan Jackson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
