The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Kaleb Johnson, the No. 51 name on the board, sitting there at the 171st pick like a gift left on the doorstep.
They are betting Howard proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a workhorse for the backfield, and a steal at that.
No edge and no loss on Derrick Harmon in the 42nd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Fair-plus on Kenneth Grant, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It fills a real need, too.
Danny Stutsman in Round 5, Pick 11 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cody Simon at the 169th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Jordan Hancock all the way to pick 170, and they scooped it up. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They barely believed it either: Kaleb Johnson still on the board at No. 171. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Lathan Ransom in pick No. 172 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Barion Brown at the 179th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into Will Howard at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
