When the story of this class is written, it opens with Terrance Ferguson at slot 172, a reach of 106 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. However the rest shakes out, Johnson at that price is a win they earned.
It is not that Jackson is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 21st pick they get a premier pass rusher. Need was not the driver here.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Landon Jackson at edge rusher with cornerback and linebacker open.
Derrick Harmon at pick 51 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
A big swing on Alfred Collins at slot 61, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jake Majors at the 75th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kaleb Johnson at Round 3, Pick 14 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
A reasonable price with a little left over, TreVeyon Henderson in pick No. 79. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dont'e Thornton Jr.. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Gunnar Helm at No. 149 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy little value on Jordan Hancock in the Round 5 slot, a step better than break-even. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They will replay Lathan Ransom at the 169th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They talked themselves into Hunter Wohler at Round 5, Pick 32, and the board did not agree. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Will Howard this early at the 171st overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
