Somebody in No. 189 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Riley Leonard, the No. 104 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Every board in the league had Slackman lower, and that gap is the story. It is not that Stewart is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want.
Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
James Pearce Jr. at pick No. 25 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A big swing on Kenneth Grant at the 47th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Josaiah Stewart adds an edge rusher and leaves wide receiver and linebacker untouched.
They reached a country mile for Ollie Gordon II at the 64th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reach for Ozzy Trapilo in No. 90; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jordan Hancock at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into Jared Ivey at Round 5, Pick 31, and the board did not agree. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A straight-up fair deal on Davison Igbinosun at pick 170, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Joey Slackman, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for Riley Leonard here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value said wait; Phillip Webb in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Oronde Gadsden II this early at pick No. 235. It fills a real need, too.
