Nobody else had Thor Griffith anywhere near the 189th overall pick. The Cowboys did, by 97 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
The Coleman value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a three-down runner at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Value with a capital V on Jalon Walker in the 45th pick, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board had Alfred Collins higher than slot 76, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Davison Igbinosun. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Sonny Styles was still sitting there in the 168th overall pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid sticker price for Eli Stowers in No. 170, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Bryce Foster in slot 171 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached a country mile for Thor Griffith at pick No. 189, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Steal is underselling it; Jonah Coleman at pick 209 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
A real head-scratcher, Julian Fleming in No. 248 is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
