Somebody in Round 5, Pick 31 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Riley Leonard, the No. 112 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The Dellinger pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.
A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want. The Cowboys indulged a want in Stewart while a need in linebacker and tight end stayed open.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the linebacker spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 23rd pick they get a premier pass rusher, even if it was a touch early.
Ollie Gordon II in the 47th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Tyleik Williams in the Round 2 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A surprising call. With linebacker and tight end still to address, they spent slot 84 on Josaiah Stewart, an edge rusher they were not short of.
Evan Stewart at No. 88 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They liked Derrick Harmon enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 4, Pick 16. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Donovan Smith in pick No. 120 is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took Jonah Coleman at par in pick 153, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A straight-up fair deal on Logan Brown at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Garrett Dellinger well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Riley Leonard in No. 169 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A need, and now a little less of one.
A quiet steal in pick 170: Nic Anderson for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for J.Michael Sturdivant here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Gentry Williams went about where he belonged in pick No. 189. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Azareye'h Thomas still on the board at the 208th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
