There is reaching, and then there is Eric Gentry at Round 7, Pick 22. The Dolphins jumped the board by 114 and dared it to prove them wrong. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
The McNeil-Warren pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a three-down runner, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 30 they get a cornerstone up front, outstanding value to boot.
Joshua Josephs in the 43rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
You do not let a cornerback like Keionte Scott reach No. 79 and blink. They did not. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The board fumbled Emmanuel McNeil-Warren all the way to Round 3, Pick 27, and they scooped it up. A minor itch, scratched.
Ted Hurst in slot 92 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nothing to complain about; Sam Hecht went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good price on Michael Trigg in the 122nd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
Dametrious Crownover at the 130th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid sticker price for Drew Allar in pick No. 151, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They talked themselves into Taylen Green at pick 152, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Demond Claiborne at Round 5, Pick 25 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Somehow Jeff Caldwell was still sitting there in slot 220, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reach for Isaiah Jatta in the Round 7 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Eric Gentry at the 238th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
