The Cowboys bet big and early on Cobee Bryant, 44 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. It bottoms out at a F.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Hudson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with quarterback still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the defensive front. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
They paid sticker price for Kaleb Johnson in pick No. 44, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Tyleik Williams at pick 45 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jihaad Campbell in the 46th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Aireontae Ersery at the 48th pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked Isaiah Bond enough to skip the value, taking him in the 63rd overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dylan Fairchild well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Joshua Farmer a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Steal is underselling it; Andrew Mukuba at pick No. 109 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Cobee Bryant this early at Round 4, Pick 29. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Mello Dotson at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cam Skattebo in pick 135 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Darius Alexander at slot 136 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; Nazir Stackhouse in the Round 5 slot says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Dorian Strong in the 167th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jason Marshall Jr. at pick No. 169 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They went early on Jay Higgins in No. 170, and the value did not follow. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Circle this one: Nick Nash at pick 171 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 184th overall pick is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Howard Cross III in Round 6, Pick 12, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Cody Lindenberg at slot 211 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kobe Hudson at the 239th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Bryson Nesbit in pick 243 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Kai Kroeger in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
