Thirty-one other rooms let Jermod McCoy slide, and the Bears were the ones holding the card at the 246th overall pick. Highway robbery. Hard to defend, and the D reflects that.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 12 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
David Bailey at Round 2, Pick 25 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kayden McDonald in the 63rd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Cashius Howell in No. 89, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Dillon Thieneman at the 112th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board fumbled Mike Washington Jr. all the way to pick 129, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They robbed the room for Jake Slaughter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Steal is underselling it; Sonny Styles at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Somehow Akheem Mesidor was still sitting there in the 218th pick, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kenyon Sadiq in No. 239 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Connor Lew at pick 241 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster fit checks out.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 246th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Ja'Kobi Lane at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Lee Hunter in Round 7, Pick 41 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
