New England Patriots

Grand theft in the Round 6 slot: the Patriots steal Dotson and grade out a B+.

This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Mello Dotson, the No. 134 name on the board, stolen at pick No. 189. No fireworks, but a solid B+.

Reaching for Kendall left real value on the table behind him. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Matthew Golden · WR · rank 10
Matthew Golden in No. 14 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R1.19 · Pick 19 · Josh Simmons · OT · rank 17
In the 19th overall pick they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Tyler Warren · TE · rank 16
Taking Tyler Warren in pick 38 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jaylin Noel · WR · rank 95
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaylin Noel in pick No. 69, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Andrew Mukuba · S · rank 83
They paid sticker price for Andrew Mukuba in the 77th pick, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.4 · Pick 106 · Devin Neal · RB · rank 80
Devin Neal in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.6 · Pick 144 · Hollin Pierce · OT · rank 135
They let Hollin Pierce come to them and pounced at Round 5, Pick 6. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.13 · Pick 189 · Mello Dotson · CB · rank 134
Mello Dotson at slot 189 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · JJ Pegues · DT · rank 182
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, JJ Pegues in the 217th overall pick, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Donovan Edwards · RB · rank 200
A running back of that caliber at the 220th pick is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Drew Kendall · C · rank 286
Drew Kendall at No. 238 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
