Somebody in pick No. 69 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chargers sat still while Kool-Aid McKinstry, the No. 19 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 5 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end at fair value.
Circle this one: Rome Odunze at the 37th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taking Kool-Aid McKinstry in slot 69 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dominick Puni in pick 105 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jarrian Jones in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy bit of business in No. 183, where Kitan Oladapo graded well above the range. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They will replay Omar Speights at Round 7, Pick 6 for years; that is how good the value is. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
