After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
However the rest shakes out, Oladapo at that price is a win they earned. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Hit on J.J. McCarthy and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get the face of the franchise, though they paid up to get him.
In No. 23 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A quiet steal in the 34th overall pick: Kool-Aid McKinstry for less than the market said. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They paid up for Kingsley Suamataia at pick No. 47 when waiting would have done the job. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Ricky Pearsall at pick 68 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Will Shipley went about where he belonged in the 103rd pick. It fills a real need, too.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 137 with a little surplus value in Christian Jones. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A straight-up fair deal on Tip Reiman at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Kitan Oladapo in the Round 6 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Michael Barrett in the 231st pick, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
