Somebody in the Round 7 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while Cam Skattebo, the No. 105 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They are betting Rogers proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The veteran additions, Myles Garrett chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a wrecking ball inside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Malaki Starks at the 38th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zy Alexander. A minor itch, scratched.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Miles Frazier. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Cam Skattebo was still sitting there in the 222nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Caleb Rogers at Round 7, Pick 22 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
