The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
They banked enough surplus on Goncalves to cover a lot of smaller sins. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Spending an early pick on TE-EDGE with edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
Patrick Paul in No. 34 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Christian Mahogany at pick No. 68 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots to take Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE that was not the priority.
They robbed the room for Matt Goncalves here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kitan Oladapo in Round 6, Pick 7. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy bit of business in pick 229, where Jawhar Jordan graded well above the range. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
