Call it larceny. Tyler Warren sat on the board until the 169th overall pick, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice.
The Howard reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a run-stuffing presence up front, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
They read the board right and Isaiah Bond was the payoff at the 45th overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Landon Jackson at the 52nd pick. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Kenneth Grant in Round 3, Pick 9 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Somehow Kaleb Johnson was still sitting there in pick No. 138, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking TreVeyon Henderson in No. 149 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Steal is underselling it; Tyler Warren at slot 169 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Circle this one: Cody Simon at pick 170 is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They barely believed it either: Lathan Ransom still on the board at the Round 5 slot. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They reached into another round for Davison Igbinosun, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Will Howard at No. 184 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on Gunnar Helm at pick 186, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A tidy little value on Bryce Foster in pick No. 187, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board had cheaper options than Miles Frazier at the 189th pick, and it noticed. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
