Nobody else had Tatum Bethune anywhere near No. 141. The Commanders did, by 68 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

Whatever Drake Maye becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They will answer for taking linebacker early while wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots went begging.

They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Getting Mahogany where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.2 · Pick 2 · Drake Maye · QB · rank 5
In No. 2 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Graham Barton · OT · rank 33
Graham Barton at the 36th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Zach Frazier · C · rank 82
Zach Frazier at pick 63 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 77
Payton Wilson at Round 3, Pick 3 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.31 · Pick 94 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 115
They bypassed pressing needs at wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots to take Junior Colson, a linebacker that was not the priority.
R3.35 · Pick 98 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 121
Khyree Jackson at the 98th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 158
Ben Sinnott in slot 100 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 87
They read the board right and Christian Mahogany was the payoff at pick No. 102. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Tatum Bethune · LB · rank 209
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tatum Bethune. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R6.14 · Pick 189 · Bryson Nesbit · TE · rank 200
They jumped the gun on Bryson Nesbit, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.30 · Pick 205 · Kurtis Rourke · QB · rank 239
They talked themselves into Kurtis Rourke at pick 205, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Cody Schrader · RB · rank 238
Cody Schrader at No. 223 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
