There is conviction, and then there is this. The Chargers took J.J. Weaver a full 64 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. On value alone, Legette makes the weekend a net positive.
On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
So much rides on Jackson Powers-Johnson that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
T'Vondre Sweat at Round 1, Pick 23 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Xavier Legette in pick 51 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Mike Sainristil went about where he belonged in slot 69. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
MarShawn Lloyd at the 84th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Brenden Rice is a better player than No. 105 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
AJ Barner at pick No. 110 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Good price on Jarrian Jones in Round 5, Pick 4, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Cornelius Johnson at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Frank Gore Jr. at No. 225 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached into another round for J.J. Weaver, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
