The Chargers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Johnson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get a red-zone target to build around. A clean fit for the roster.
Kool-Aid McKinstry in No. 37 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Xavier Legette at slot 71 for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Sedrick Van Pran in pick No. 90, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Dillon Johnson at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
A tidy bit of business in the 136th pick, where Tommy Eichenberg graded well above the range. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
By-the-book stuff, Javion Cohen at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Beau Brade all the way to No. 152, and they scooped it up. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Braelon Allen in the 170th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
