The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched Colston Loveland slide 126 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter.
Nice patience on Kenneth Grant, who had no business lasting to pick 37. It fills a real need, too.
They read the board right and Omarion Hampton was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Grey Zabel in No. 66 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nick Emmanwori at the 76th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick No. 119 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Colston Loveland in the 150th pick is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Luke Kandra in slot 152, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Dont'e Thornton Jr. went about where he belonged in slot 170. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Steal is underselling it; Jordan James at Round 6, Pick 12 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
