Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Cam Ward got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at the 217th overall pick.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The back end got a real overhaul.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get a potential shutdown corner. More want than need.
Ashton Jeanty at the 33rd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A edge rusher of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Wyatt Milum all the way to No. 67, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They robbed the room for Tre Harris here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They will replay Colston Loveland at the 93rd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Walter Nolen in pick 103 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jahdae Barron in Round 4, Pick 3 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Aireontae Ersery in the 139th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
Circle this one: Cam Ward at pick 217 is a fall that decides a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Dylan Fairchild in the 235th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
