The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Luke McCaffrey slide 65 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
Jayden Daniels gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th pick they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid sticker price for Adonai Mitchell in No. 34, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Ja'Tavion Sanders in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
Taking Jordan Morgan in pick 68 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nice patience on Jalen McMillan, who had no business lasting to the 107th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dylan Laube at No. 136 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
They read the board right and Kamal Hadden was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 7. A minor itch, scratched.
A tidy bit of business in slot 184, where Javion Cohen graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They let Caedan Wallace come to them and pounced at pick No. 188. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Luke McCaffrey at the 229th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
