Somebody in No. 144 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chiefs sat still while Deontae Lawson, the No. 82 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They will need Ezeiruaku to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback, running back and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
They reached a country mile for Donovan Ezeiruaku at Round 2, Pick 9, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Xavier Watts slid further than he should have, and the 64th overall pick is lovely value for the safety. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A surprising call. With quarterback, running back and other spots still to address, they spent No. 66 on Andrew Mukuba, a safety they were not short of.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick 96 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Mason Taylor was still sitting there in pick No. 133, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Deontae Lawson all the way to slot 144, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Garrett Dellinger at the 255th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
