The John Morgan III pick is the one that will follow the Chiefs into the fall. They took him 93 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Landing Legette that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 28 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value.
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 32 they get a cornerstone up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on Kiran Amegadjie at No. 60, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Fair-plus on Ruke Orhorhoro, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
No drama and no debate, Bralen Trice went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 32. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at the 93rd overall pick is the proof. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A big swing on James Williams at pick No. 95, well ahead of any board in the building. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They will replay Xavier Legette at pick 99 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.

Jaylin Simpson in the 158th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tykee Smith in No. 159. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Luke McCaffrey. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Trevor Keegan in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good price on Sione Vaki in Round 5, Pick 36, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Rasheen Ali. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid up for Erick All at pick 202 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at slot 206 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Blake Watson this early at Round 6, Pick 40. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Myles Cole in pick No. 226 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taulia Tagovailoa at the 246th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached into another round for Trajan Jeffcoat, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
