The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Michael Penix Jr., and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
The Sinnott reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
The Stover pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman still on the board. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 27th pick they get a sticky cover corner at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
A conviction pick on Patrick Paul at pick 34 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach on Ja'Lynn Polk in the 39th overall pick; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Tyler Guyton went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 10. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reach for Christian Mahogany in pick No. 68; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for Sedrick Van Pran at No. 76 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A want over a need in slot 82: Cade Stover adds a TE-EDGE while interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Somehow Ricky Pearsall was still sitting there in Round 3, Pick 27, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent No. 98 on Khyree Jackson, a cornerback they were not short of.
Dominick Puni in the 104th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A wild overpay on Ben Sinnott in pick 109, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Dylan Laube at the 114th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kitan Oladapo in pick No. 136, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Zion Tupuola-Fetui well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Frank Gore Jr. in slot 182. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy bit of business in the 188th pick, where Roger Rosengarten graded well above the range. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Sam Hartman in pick No. 229, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
