The 49ers put a flag in the ground for Matt Gulbin, 43 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Landing Davis that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most. Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a security blanket over the middle at a price that makes it sweeter.
They paid a round early for Chase Bisontis in the 62nd pick, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Bud Clark at pick 111. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They robbed the room for Tacario Davis here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Zxavian Harris in pick No. 133, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on Matt Gulbin in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kevin Coleman Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Zane Durant at the 170th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
