The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Caleb Williams, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Mustapha. Reaching for Bethune left real value on the table behind him. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 27 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Tavion Sanders. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Austin Booker at pick No. 68, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Khyree Jackson is a better player than the 90th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Will Shipley at Round 4, Pick 4 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Johnny Wilson at No. 136. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board fumbled Malik Mustapha all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Luke McCaffrey here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tatum Bethune at No. 229 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
