The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They banked enough surplus on Dixon to cover a lot of smaller sins. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Nice patience on Chop Robinson, who had no business lasting to No. 34. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Devontez Walker went about where he belonged in pick 68. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Zak Zinter at Round 4, Pick 3 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Good price on Christian Jones in slot 137, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tip Reiman at the Round 6 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
Circle this one: Cody Schrader at the 194th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: Johnny Dixon still on the board at the 214th pick. A minor itch, scratched.
A tidy little value on Tatum Bethune in pick No. 231, a step better than break-even. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
