Whoever sat across the table from the Patriots should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.
Coleman falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The Milton III pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Spending an early pick on cornerback with edge rusher and running back open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Brian Thomas Jr. and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a home-run threat at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Kamari Lassiter in Round 2, Pick 2 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
Keon Coleman at slot 58 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Braden Fiske at pick 66. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Patrick Paul. The roster fit checks out.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 88th overall pick on Khyree Jackson with edge rusher and running back unsolved.
Dominick Puni is a better player than pick 102 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Ainias Smith at the 136th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No edge and no loss on Beau Brade in No. 137; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, Jaheim Bell at pick No. 161 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Joe Milton III well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A tidy little value on Tip Reiman in the 231st pick, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
