The Patriots torched the value chart for Joe Milton III, taking him 62 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
A whole weekend of picks and safety is somehow still a want. Getting Jackson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end. A real need, handled.
Troy Fautanu at pick 34 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Keon Coleman. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in pick No. 68; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid up for Brandon Dorlus at the 71st overall pick when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Will Shipley at the 104th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board had McKinnley Jackson higher than pick No. 136, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value said wait; Joe Milton III in No. 137 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
A quiet steal in the 182nd pick: Layden Robinson for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
A conviction pick on Trey Knox at the Round 7 slot that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
