The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. However the rest shakes out, Jackson at that price is a win they earned.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at pick No. 34 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Christian Haynes at the Round 3 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Khyree Jackson slid further than he should have, and the 103rd overall pick is lovely value for the cornerback. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Fair-plus on Christian Jones, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Khristian Boyd. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Joe Milton III at slot 193 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tatum Bethune in the 231st pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
