The Cowboys did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Kobe Hudson fell into pick No. 249.
It is not that Gillotte is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. If Gillotte pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a bendy edge with upside. More want than need.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Ashton Gillotte at edge rusher with quarterback and tight end open.
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 12: Deone Walker for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Kalel Mullings in the 116th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Lander Barton graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Xavier Scott in pick No. 190 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Trey Zuhn III at par in the 211th pick, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kobe Hudson in No. 249 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
