The tape said wait; the Bills did not. John Emery Jr. went at the 250th pick, a good 110 picks before the board was ready. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The Sainristil pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Job largely done: linebacker settled and 6 of 9 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Good price on Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 61, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A slide stopped in the 99th overall pick, with Michael Hall Jr. worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
LaDarius Henderson at pick 129 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled Mike Sainristil all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jordan Toles this early at the 200th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Fentrell Cypress II at slot 207 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Darius Muasau at pick No. 208 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value said wait; John Emery Jr. in pick 250 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
