The Bills treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending Round 5, Pick 19 on Joe Milton III a full 39 spots early.
Chestnut at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Bills indulged a want in Smith while a need in interior defensive lineman, wide receiver and other spots stayed open.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Nubin at the Round 1 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
A want over a need in No. 50: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while interior defensive lineman, wide receiver and other spots keeps waiting.
They read the board right and Marist Liufau was the payoff at the 99th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid up for Jaden Hicks at pick 118 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Jason Marshall Jr. went about where he belonged in pick No. 148. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Joe Milton III at slot 155 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay LaDarius Henderson at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reach for Miles Frazier in pick 199; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jahdae Barron this early at pick No. 208. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
You do not let a cornerback like Duce Chestnut reach No. 239 and blink. They did not. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
