Call it larceny. Will Howard sat on the board until No. 171, and the Bills did not need to be asked twice. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They went 8 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 30 they get a home-run threat at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Tyleik Williams is a better player than slot 56 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Demetrius Knight Jr. at the 62nd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Donovan Jackson at the 108th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board had Ajani Cornelius higher than the Round 4 slot, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Will Howard at pick 171 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Jordan James here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 179 is the definition of value, full stop. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Upton Stout at the 206th pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Luke Lachey at No. 208. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
