You could see the war room lean forward. Sataoa Laumea at the Round 5 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
The Trotter Jr. pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 22 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Payton Wilson at pick 51 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Rome Odunze in slot 53 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had Maason Smith higher than Round 4, Pick 19, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at linebacker with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 161st overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Sataoa Laumea at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Kitan Oladapo at the 172nd pick is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Johnny Wilson in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Kamal Hadden in pick 210 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
