The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
However the rest shakes out, Flournoy at that price is a win they earned. The Johnson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
They read the board right and Troy Fautanu was the payoff at the 36th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Chris Braswell at pick 40 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with T.J. Tampa worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Zak Zinter in No. 90, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value said wait; Theo Johnson in the 100th overall pick says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Maason Smith in pick No. 104 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No drama and no debate, Tommy Eichenberg went about where he belonged in slot 139. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Roger Rosengarten in slot 152 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ryan Flournoy at the Round 7 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
