If confidence were a draft strategy, the Cowboys would have aced it. Trajan Jeffcoat at pick 244 is 64 spots clear of where he belonged.
Landing Dixon that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. The Rashid Shaheed pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get protection for the quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
Trey Benson in the Round 2 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Layden Robinson this early at slot 150. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Curtis Jacobs in the 174th pick, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jaylan Ford at the 175th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Johnny Dixon in pick No. 216 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Sheridan Jones slipping to the Round 7 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trajan Jeffcoat well ahead of where he belonged. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Evan Anderson at pick No. 256 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
Eyabi Okie-Anoma at pick 257 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
