Nobody else had McCallan Castles anywhere near the Round 6 slot. The Commanders did, by 142 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It bottoms out at a F.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.

It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The Puni pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 8
In the 5th pick they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.10 · Pick 10 · Laiatu Latu · DL-EDGE · rank 7
Good price on Laiatu Latu in the Round 1 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 26
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Troy Fautanu at pick 36. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Bo Nix · QB · rank 31
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 8, where Bo Nix graded well above the range. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 42
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chris Braswell. The roster fit checks out.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Zach Frazier · C · rank 61
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zach Frazier in slot 67. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 65
They did well to land Mike Sainristil in the 69th pick, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.35 · Pick 98 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 81
The board had Khyree Jackson higher than the 98th overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.1 · Pick 101 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 131
Value said wait; Ben Sinnott in slot 101 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Javon Solomon · OLB-EDGE · rank 113
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 3: Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE while running back and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · Dominick Puni · OT · rank 88
Dominick Puni at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Anim Dankwah · OT · rank 276
They talked themselves into Anim Dankwah at No. 138, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · McCallan Castles · TE · rank 323
A wild overpay on McCallan Castles in pick 181, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.12 · Pick 187 · Steele Chambers · LB · rank 191
Steele Chambers in pick No. 187 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R6.45 · Pick 220 · Curtis Jacobs · LB · rank 196
Curtis Jacobs in the 220th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R7.33 · Pick 253 · J.J. Weaver · LB-EDGE · rank 311
J.J. Weaver at pick 253 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.34 · Pick 254 · Trajan Jeffcoat · DL-EDGE · rank 303
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trajan Jeffcoat. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.39 · Pick 257 · De'Corian Clark · WR · rank 267
A reach on De'Corian Clark in Round 7, Pick 39; the board had better options right there. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
