Nobody else had Austin Stogner anywhere near the 139th overall pick. The Chargers did, by 66 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Put together, it is a D.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Taylor-Demerson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
Bralen Trice in slot 37 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Chris Braswell in No. 65 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Josh Newton in the 69th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value said wait; Cole Bishop in Round 4, Pick 6 says they were not listening. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
By-the-book stuff, MarShawn Lloyd at the 126th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Austin Stogner at pick 139 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They barely believed it either: Dadrion Taylor-Demerson still on the board at the Round 6 slot. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Nice patience on De'Corian Clark, who had no business lasting to the 223rd overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A big swing on Collin Schlee at the 256th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
