Los Angeles Chargers

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Chargers and Edwards: D-.

Somebody took the Chargers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.

They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They are betting Gargiulo proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Getting Edwards where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Malik Nabers · WR · rank 4
In the 5th pick they get a go-to option on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.19 · Pick 19 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 10
The board had Rome Odunze higher than Round 1, Pick 19, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 23
Amarius Mims at No. 33 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 77
Kris Abrams-Draine at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.17 · Pick 81 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 74
Calen Bullock at pick 81 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Brennan Jackson · DE-EDGE · rank 151
They paid up for Brennan Jackson at the 139th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Nick Gargiulo · C · rank 201
This one needs a full-page explanation: Nick Gargiulo in the 183rd pick, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Nathaniel Watson · LB · rank 206
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 223. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R7.15 · Pick 235 · Daijun Edwards · RB · rank 204
Taking Daijun Edwards in Round 7, Pick 15 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.36 · Pick 256 · Josh Wallace · CB · rank 251
Good price on Josh Wallace in slot 256, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
