Somebody took the Chargers to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They are betting Gargiulo proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Getting Edwards where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th pick they get a go-to option on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board had Rome Odunze higher than Round 1, Pick 19, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Amarius Mims at No. 33 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A need, and now a little less of one.
Kris Abrams-Draine at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Calen Bullock at pick 81 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid up for Brennan Jackson at the 139th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Nick Gargiulo in the 183rd pick, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 223. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Taking Daijun Edwards in Round 7, Pick 15 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good price on Josh Wallace in slot 256, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
