The real work happened on the phones. The Chargers fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
If Davis pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 6 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Ja'Tavion Sanders went about where he belonged in the 37th pick. The roster fit checks out.
Kris Jenkins in pick 38 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A slide stopped in the Round 4 slot, with Max Melton worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Beau Brade at pick No. 139 squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Value said wait; Isaiah Davis in slot 145 says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Luke McCaffrey in Round 6, Pick 8, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Andrew Raym at the 223rd pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They went early on Jackson Sirmon in the Round 7 slot, and the value did not follow. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
