Nobody else had Cornelius Johnson anywhere near slot 256. The Chargers did, by 124 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Irving.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a security blanket over the middle at fair value.
They talked themselves into Sedrick Van Pran at pick 37, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They liked Roman Wilson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 69. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Bucky Irving at the 106th pick. It fills a real need, too.
LaDarius Henderson at Round 5, Pick 3 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Michael Barrett at the 183rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Wallace. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Cornelius Johnson at pick 256 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
