It is the swing that defines the weekend: Andrew Raym in the 190th overall pick, a good 49 spots before the room expected him.
The Chargers indulged a want in McKinstry while a need in interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots stayed open. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. Tampa at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Kool-Aid McKinstry adds a defensive back and leaves interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots untouched.
They paid a round early for Trey Benson in No. 44, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking T.J. Tampa at defensive back with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots open.
A straight-up fair deal on Roman Wilson at pick No. 112, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Ty'Ron Hopper at par in pick 149, which is nothing to complain about. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Andrew Raym at the 190th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
Tyler Batty at slot 233 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
